These Smart Glasses Will Read Your Emotions and Watch What You Eat

How are you feeling today? Hopefully you’re good. But hey, remember how you were feeling two Tuesdays ago? That answer might feel a little hazier. If only there were some kind of tech that kept track of that sort of thing.

A company called Emteq Labs has unveiled its vision for a new type of smart glasses—ones that peer inward at you rather than outward at the world. The glasses, called Sense, have a series of sensors in them that the company says can monitor facial movements in real time to discern the emotional state of the wearer. Sensors at the top of the frame monitor eye and eyebrow movements, while sensors on the bottom rim can detect cheek and jaw movements. Together, the sensors can pick up the subtle movements that occur when people make expressions like smiling or frowning, or when they are chewing food.

Real-Time Video Deepfake Scams Are Here. This Tool Attempts to Zap Them

Christopher Ren does a solid Elon Musk impression.

Ren is a product manager at Reality Defender, a company that makes tools to combat AI disinformation. During a video call last week, I watched him use some viral GitHub code and a single photo to generate a simplistic deepfake of Elon Musk that maps onto his own face. This digital impersonation was to demonstrate how the startup’s new AI detection tool could work. As Ren masqueraded as Musk on our video chat, still frames from the call were actively sent over to Reality Defender’s custom model for analysis, and the company’s widget on the screen alerted me to the fact that I was likely looking at an AI-generated deepfake and not the real Elon.

After living in big cities like San Francisco and New York, when I set foot in Wally World in the Midwest, I heard angels sing. Rows and rows of fluorescent lights highlighted any and every product needed for your house in one place. Screw the mom-and-pop bodega—I missed this level of convenience. If by chance they don’t have what you need in-store, there’s even more online, with pickup and delivery available.

No one likes the feeling of insect repellent. I have vivid memories of being sprayed down with the stuff as a kid before venturing into the woods in northern Minnesota on family vacations and feeling like chemical warfare was being waged on all of my senses. I was willing to endure it because being covered in mosquito bites is even worse. And the truth is, wearing repellent can save your life, protecting you against West Nile virus and Lyme disease, just to name a few of the pathogens mosquitos and ticks can pass on.

These Apps Help People With Disabilities Travel Smarter and Safer

Technology makes travel easier by allowing us to research and map out our travel plans. But for the disability community, technology can be the most valuable travel companion. The following apps and sites help people with disabilities make smart and safe choices so they can get out in the world and explore more than ever.

The service AccessibleGO was created by Miriam Eljas, whose mom, Emma, had multiple sclerosis and was a wheelchair user. The site allows you to book accessible flights and hotels across the United States. Then, a team member calls each of the vendors to confirm they can meet your needs. Founder Eljas tells me that the additional follow-up call offers assurance for clients with disabilities, “so you know a real person has understood your accessibility requirements and has personally spoken with your hotel, airline, or car company to ensure a smooth trip.”

Earlier this month I complimented a friend on her new Bottega Jodie bag. She had recently got a promotion at work, and is now a senior manager at a respectable record label earning six figures. The bag was a celebratory gift, she told me, only it wasn’t Bottega—it was a dupe.

Gaming is starting to look more and more like Netflix: Instead of buying a disc at the store and popping it in at home, you have a bevy of services from Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nvidia, and even Netflix itself. Services provide access to tons of games for a monthly price, or allow you to stream them without the need for a long download. Between Xbox Game Pass Core, Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, PS Plus Premium, Nintendo Switch Online, and everything else, it’s hard to know what’s worth paying for. Let’s break it all down.

Richard Mille's New McLaren Watch Has a ‘Jump Start’ Button

Such is the world of luxury products, that customers for McLaren Automotive’s newly announced $2.6 million W1 hypercar can now order a watch to match.

The fourth watch produced as a result of the long-term partnership between McLaren and luxury watchmaker Richard Mille, the RM 65-01 “McLaren W1 Edition” was announced this week in a press conference at the carmaker’s Woking headquarters.

Billed as something approaching a hypercar for the wrist, the watch, which will cost 320,000 Swiss francs plus taxes ($373,300) is a tribute to the design language of the car, which was revealed to the world last Sunday. With a split-second chronograph movement and a couple of other tricks up its sleeve, it houses what Richard Mille says is the most complicated automatic movement it has ever produced.
